Five materials, one Hamptons winter
Every South Fork patio or pool deck decision comes down to the same short list: bluestone, concrete pavers, travertine, porcelain, or a premium natural stone like granite or limestone. Each looks different underfoot, costs a different amount, and takes a Long Island winter differently. This guide compares them on what we could actually source — installed cost, water absorption, sealing, and the questions worth asking a mason — and says plainly where the published data runs out rather than filling the gap with a guess.

The Long Island figures come from three paving contractors' own marketing pages, which disagree with each other; we treat them as market color, not audited price lists, and print the spread rather than an average. Material alone is a smaller number than the table suggests: natural cleft bluestone runs $6–11 per square foot and thermal $9–14, with the thicker stone (1½ to 2 inches, the Long Island dry-set standard) adding $2–6 over 1-inch material.
The number that actually decides which one survives here
Long Island's freeze-thaw cycle, not its salt air, is what breaks a stone surface. Water gets into the face, freezes, expands, and pops material loose. Bluestone absorbs less than 2% of its weight in water, the best varieties under 0.5%, which is the reason it is the South Fork's default rather than a marketing claim. We could not find a comparable published absorption or freeze-thaw figure for porcelain or travertine specific to a Hamptons climate; ask the mason for the manufacturer's test data before either goes around an unheated pool that sits full of ice for a month.
Weight matters too, mostly for anything built over a structure rather than on grade: bluestone runs about 13.5 pounds per square foot at a nominal 1 inch and roughly 20.25 pounds at 1½ inches, with a density around 150–165 pounds per cubic foot. A pool deck cantilevered over a shell, a rooftop terrace, or a deck built above a garage is a load calculation before it is a material choice, and that number is where the conversation with an engineer starts.
Thermal or natural cleft: a $3-per-square-foot question
Both faces are the same feldspathic sandstone, quarried by roughly 150 mostly small operations across the Catskills and northeastern Pennsylvania. Natural cleft is split along the stone's own grain: textured, a little irregular, better grip when wet, and cheaper because the quarry does less to it. Thermal is heat-treated to a flat, uniform face: cleaner sightlines, easier to sweep, and about $3 more per square foot in material for the extra quarry labor. Neither is more freeze-thaw resistant than the other — the absorption figures above apply to both faces of the same stone. Where pavers, travertine and porcelain earn their place
Concrete pavers are the value play and the most argued-about one. One source puts a dry-laid paver system at 50-plus years against 10–20 for a mortared installation; another puts a well-installed dry-laid system at 20-plus years and a mortar-set flagstone patio at up to 50 years "with minor repairs." The two disagree about which method wins and by how much, so we print both rather than pick a side. What both agree on is the mechanism: dry-laid joints move with frost, a rigid mortared slab does not, and that mechanism is also the entire case for why bluestone here is dry-set rather than mortared.
Travertine and porcelain sit at the top of the Long Island table, $25–45 and $30–50 respectively, for a more uniform, less visibly porous surface than bluestone and a more consistent color lot to lot. Travertine is a natural stone, usually sold filled and honed; porcelain is manufactured and marketed as effectively non-absorbent. We could not source a Hamptons-specific freeze-thaw failure rate for either, which is not the same as a clean bill of health — it means nobody local has published the number, so a mason's own callback history with the material matters as much as the spec sheet does.
Sealing, by material
Whatever you lay, the sealer rule does not change: a penetrating silane or siloxane sealer that lets the stone breathe, never a film-forming product, which traps moisture under the surface and flakes it off in a freeze-thaw cycle. Recommended cadence runs 2–4 years for a natural-stone patio, tightening to about 3 years near salt air or a pool, at roughly $1–2 per square foot; joints filled with polymeric sand need redoing every 3–7 years, up to 10 in the best conditions, regardless of what sits on top of them. None of that depends on which material you chose — it is maintenance on the joint and the surface, not a bluestone-only chore.
What we went looking for and could not find
A current bluestone price or supply-trend story: the only substantive market discussion of the roughly 150-quarry Catskill-and-Pennsylvania supply base we could locate was two decades old, too stale to tell you whether prices are heading up or holding flat. A single, sourced lifespan-in-years figure for a bluestone patio: the industry describes it as very durable and stops there, so we do not print a number nobody has actually measured. And, as above, a Hamptons- or even a general freeze-thaw absorption figure for porcelain or travertine, the two materials climbing fastest in the Long Island price table.
Reading the material line on a quote
A quote that names only "natural stone" or "pavers" has not named a material. Ask for the stone by name (bluestone, travertine, porcelain, granite), the finish (natural cleft or thermal for bluestone; honed, filled or tumbled for travertine), the thickness, the setting method (dry-set on a compacted base or mortared on a slab), and the sealer brand and type. A mason who can answer all five in one sentence has laid the material before; one who cannot is guessing along with you.
